An inquiry is simply a record that someone requested your credit report. Inquiries are generally a matter of fact. This is provided largely for the protection of the consumer, providing notification that their credit report was accessed, and by whom. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), a credit reporting agency is required to retain a record of companies who have accessed your credit report. Because inquiries are added automatically at the moment the request is made, there is no question as to whether or not the inquiry occurred, you can’t dispute them or have them removed. The one exception can be in cases of credit fraud.
The fact that a consumer report was requested "in error" does not nullify the fact that the report was furnished; that information must be retained by the CRA so that it can comply with Sections 609(a)(3) and 611(d) of the FCRA among other reasons. If you have a question or dispute with a specific inquiry, it's best to contact the specific company that requested your credit report. Please note that the credit bureau or credit agency plays no part in the decision to take any action on your loan application request, and is unable to provide you with specific reasons for the decision on a loan application.
The Fair Credit Reporting Act allows access to your credit report to those with “permissible purpose”, such as someone who intends to use the information in connection with a credit transaction involving the extension of credit or the review or collection of an account. Looking for a mortgage, auto or student loan may cause multiple lenders to request your credit report, even though you are only looking for one loan. To compensate for this, FICO® scores largely ignore recent mortgage and automotive inquiries. These types of inquiries, even in large numbers, generally have little if any impact on FICO scores. Consequently, the removal of a mortgage or automotive inquiry will typically not improve a FICO score.
